Cultural Statistics Strategy

In 2013 CCNC became the coordinating body for municipal government participation in the Cultural Statistics Strategy. We are pleased to continue this initiative in 2018.

The Cultural Statistics Strategy (CSS) is a partnership of national, provincial, and municipal partners. The initiative is co-led by the Department of Canadian Heritage and the 13 provinces and territories who hired Statistics Canada to develop the Culture Satelite Account. The purpose of the partnership is to maintain and continue to enhance the collection of cultural data which would be useful in making policy decisions for all levels of government and our communities. While there is an abundance of data being produced, there are fewer reliable sources collecting and making it available. The CSS not only accesses the most reliable and rigorous statistics on culture, available through the Canadian System of Macroeconomic Accounts, it also cultivates a conversation and consensus between federal, provincial and municipal cultural partners about how and what to collect.

In the future, the Culture Satellite Account will continue to be an invaluable resource to the sector enabling not only a benchmark for valuing the economic importance of culture at the provincial and territorial level, but also for discovering new insights into how culture works at the local level and in our specific cities.
